The Focus

The Focus

I have decided I am going to do the dress one, and if you do not remember it was this plan:

But there is a catch. I am actually going to make 5 dresses There will different ones for different places, sort of like ‘fairy’ dresses for each place. I was thinking of doing a photo shoot at each place. And then presenting the dress in front of the different images. I would need a really good camera for the photo shoot. Since my word is change, not only am I changing into different outfits that I will be creating them and showing the change in the different places there are.

November 13th, 2011 – November 17th, 2011

Start of Dress Number One: The Construction Dress (representation of the construction at A-State)

It started out with a quick sketch of a model (above). I decided to start with the leaf dress first, but I really got frustrated with the stick belt that I constructed and I left it at that, when my patience ran out with the leaves….So I decided to stop and start on a new dress. So, the construction of the construction dress began.

Here is the beginning structure of the top of the dress. I used this shiney bubble wrap to create this sense of newness like the construction up at Alfred State.

As I continued building the dress I changed the original idea I started out with this very simple idea, but it soon became quite complex.

This is me in my dorm as soon as I "finished" the basic dress.

This ended up becoming something similar to a roman style dress. I think I was subconsciously wanting to show the fight of construction and reconstruction and building and rebuilding, destroying and creating. I also in my revised sketch of my original (seen below).

Dress Number Two: Oak Dress

I want this dress to represent the main strip here in Alfred University, Academic Ally. I wanted to create the elvish beauty of people in one with the earth. Sort of like I wish I could be like. So I designed a dress that was oak leaf and stick oriented. But I ran into some issues with the leaves. The leaves became hard to control and began to crumble as I started to put them together, to create the skirt. but it did not work. One thing that did work for me was the stick belt that I created. I think i am going to end up making a clothe dress with different green, yellow, and brown (burnt senna) tones. I hope to create a layering effect to create the sensation of oak leaves layered on top of each other, like the ground in the fall.

Dress Number Three: The Grass Dress

This dress, was inspired by the hill behind the engineering building (McMahn, I think).  There I gathered straw and long grasses I plan to make into a very textured dress. It will definitely be interesting creating this dress. I think I a going to purchase some ribbon to glue the straw and grasses to for support. It will be very itchy when I am doing to do the photo shoot.

Dress Number Four: The Pine Dress

This dress is going to have pine cones around the waste and then I am going to get some pine branches or even go out and purchase some fake pine branches so the pine needles do not fall off the dress. But I will definitely use the pine cones  I have collected. For the ‘slip’ underneath, I am going to use black fabric.

November 19, 2011

A couple days of thinking about my dresses I have come up with a new plan for my construction dress, and I have some ideas that have yet to be sketched out. I got feed back from Michelle and Brandon on Thursday. In simplistic words my dresses were two cutesy and well they needed to transform the body more aka Lady Gaga it up! So I am getting rid of the construction dress and rebuilding. The construction will start over of the thanksgiving break, due to the fact that I need my sowing machine and I need fabric, which my mother has a lot of that. But here is the design for the construction dress:

November 23rd through the 27th

Over break I planned and was starting to work on my dresses I drew out some new sketches which will actually be constructed into dresses.

This is a quick sketch of the pine dress.

The Proposal

The Proposal

First Proposal: Dresses out of natural substances.

In this I wanted create multiple dresses in which could be worn, and maybe possibly a pair of pants and a tunic made of the natural substances that surround us. With that said I wanted to create a sense of the beauty that we take for granted. The beauty that surrounds us and we do not take in.

Second Proposal: Mr. Squishy and His adventures.

In this one, I want to convey a view or transformation to the view of this little panda, named Mr. Squishy. I wanted people to view the line, in the view of a very little thing. And I want to transform the idea of point of view in this fact.

Third Proposal: The Collage

I want to convey in this collage the facts of the beauty in the world but being made up of this man made, destructiveness.  I want to create a sense of peace and calmness. But not only that I want people to step back and come to the realization that it is made up of the man created garbage and junk that we pollute our world with.

The Word: My Explorations With The Word Change

The Word: My Explorations With The Word Change

My First Exploration: Found Paint

This was an interesting I began to see the different things that I could use as paint. It helped me change the way I looked for things  that I could use to ‘paint’ on the paper. It began to get interesting as time when on. I used 2 different spots for mud, one spot was VERY wet which came out quite darker that the dry mud that I put on the paper. Also, the moss came a different color than I expected. I also changed the stuff I used I actually found some dead paint in REPO and I also used rust. I even picked up a cigarette off the ground and rubbed the burnt side on the paper. With every one I found I became more open to my surrounds, changing the way I viewed the line.

My Second Exploration: The Hand in the bag with 4 objects inside and a survey for people to write about what they feel….

The best way to explain this is that I had a bag where I placed the following objects in a bag:

Then I had six of my friends place there hands in the bag and feel the stuff with out looking at the objects. They each explained them very differently. I wanted to show the change, or difference between different people view of the objects without looking at them. And each of the objects were on the line. I brought them to my friends in my dorm for them to experience the line.

IMAGES THAT CAME UP ON GOOGLE:

This image came up, and it is quite obvious why it came up, due to the fact that it is actual change.

From= http://simplycreativethings.com/2011/08/a-penny-on-the-road-is-a-penny-saved/

When I typed the word ‘change’ in it was interesting to see that the first view images of signs. Such as this one (click here to see).  It is interesting that people relate to change as a place and a path. One image I thought was quite funny was there was an image that came up that happened to be another WordPress blog. I thought it was a quite an amusing sketch (click here to view). Also, Obama ended up showing up as I scrolled down, his classic change memo that he used for his campaign (click here to view).

EXAMPLES OF CHANGE:

  • I wanted to change my appearance as I went down the line. I want to experience the line as a panda, so I will go as a panda and walk around on all fours. I would also go in different ‘characters’ and I would experience and evolve with the Line. I would probably go in the forest and walk on main street to see peoples reaction to me walking as a panda. I would also try to be thinking about what a panda would think.
  • I could also change the way I look at the line, by traveling in different ways.
Why I chose ‘change’:
I wanted to be a panda so as I was looking at all the words on the wall. And change seemed like the best fit for me changing into a panda and experiencing the line as one.
Boundaries:
I think I would do the middle part of the line, especially the wooded area, and the side of Cohen studio with the bamboo like plants. I also want to see the reaction of people, as I climb on all fours on the line.

Exploring the Line

Exploring the Line

Setting up the line:

We (Pedro, Yong, Emmanuel, Sam, Ryan and myself)  received section nine, which consisted of mostly woods. It was interesting due to the fact that we had to find and “build” the line in the snow.  We at least had the parking lot to base the line off.  I was glad that we could use the parking line as we began the climb., as we climbed we worked together figuring out where the line should be.  As we climbed up the big hill, I marked the trees with yarn and scraps of cloth. We also used the marked trail in the woods as a marker for the end of our section. It was really interesting on the way down, I thought it would be best to just have a constant line so people would not get lost. and it ended up working quite well. It got more interesting on the way down, especially in the snow because there was mud and some water underneath the snow.  We all just had to be careful especially on the steep part at the beginning. When we finished the people in group ten just arrived and were off to set foot on our path and went up the very large hill. We had left over yarn so we just gave them it. so they could go as strait as they could in the woods, later I found out that the spot was only about five to ten feet off. (not bad for being in the woods, right?)

Here is a picture of me after the hike:

Here is the a better idea of what the weather was like while we were making our line:

Here is my groups section of the line:

NEXT TIME LEARNING THE LINE:

This was an interesting experience, learning the  A-State side. But on our way up I specifically remember this guy stopped and stood there for a good five minutes and stared at us gathered around a wall when some one was showing where the line went through the wall. This guy was just standing there, dumbfounded that a group of people are crowded around a  wall and talking about the line. I have to say that was a very funny moment. Especially when my friend Sam, nudged me and pointed him out. I just did my best not to start laughing out loud. Another thing I enjoyed was the bamboo-like plants on the side of the Cohen studio.  I think I am going to explore the bamboo- like plants and act like a panda and think like a panda, while dressing like one. I think it would be interesting to see people’s reaction to someone sitting in the bushes dressed like a panda.

NOVEMBER 1, 2011: LINE ART AND EXPERIENCES:

I decided to create a video on my adventures on the other half, and figuring out where the line is.   I had a pretty good sense where the line placement is and where everything is on the new unexplored half, which I experienced by myself. I enjoyed the silence and listening to the birds and being surrounded by trees. Everything seemed to be better than every as I explored the line.  As I went, I decided to collect  garbage to make an art project which ended up become some kind of pointy flower with many sharp edges to show the beauty that causes harm, like the garbage that covers the earth, like the homes and building that people build and create that are beautiful and wonderful to so many, but effect the environment is the prickly part and causes harm.

IMAGE OF MY SCULPTURE:

As I started to climb the mountain I began to notice the sounds that surrounded me. So I decided to record the sounds as I walked (which could not be uploaded on this blog, its saved on my iPod). Also as I walked I picked up some sticks and ended up making  a stick sculpture in which I plan on attaching it to a tree later. the sound of them rattling sounds sort of like bones rattling giving a really effect of eeriness.

While picking up sticks and garbage I gathered all types of leaves and bark. I ended making a “piece of paper” out of the leaves. It ended up being the forest floor at the end of  the line. So I ended up being able to have a portable walking floor.

I also decided to create a video of me walking the part of the line in the woods. Which I created and used the beginning of Vertical Horizons’ song “Underwater” which is my favorite song, due to the calmness of the woods, this song seemed to fit perfectly. Here is the website for my simple video:

I also took some lovely images of things I found interesting.

Personal Territory Tour

Personal Territory Tour

This is my territory. Which I chose because of the beautiful view.

My territory is an area where one can just sit there on a beautiful day and enjoy the sunshine. These two “rocks,” which are beautiful sculptures, are very comfortable and very smooth to the touch. I found this ‘territory’ when I was exploring Alfred University on my usual runs. I found this place. I thought it would be perfect for this specific project. You can see for yourself, how beautiful the view is:

MY 50 THINGS

MY EXPLORATIONS:

EXPLORATION # 14

Which is the found map. I changed it a little due to the fact I was getting really cold because it was so windy up there.  I only sat there for half an hour (30 minutes). In which I just listened and held my watch. and put done the times when I hear them and where they are in relation to me on a “map,” so I drew a really rough sketch in my little notebook and did a REALLY quick sketch of my map.

Exploration # 17

This one, you had to make an instant sculpture, which I made with stuff that surrounded the area. I found pieces of clay and a couple sticks which I used to make the “instant sculpture” with. It was very interesting while creating it. I really enjoyed making it. Here are 3 different pictures from different angles of the quick sculpture.

MY GUIDE

I decided, since I learned how to make books really well in the last block, that I could just make a book again… So I did, but to make it more interesting I have very few words. I used pictures to show how to get there, because I figured a lot of art people are visual, and I cannot spell. So I thought it would be safer if I just stuck to taking some pictures and make the book look awesome. So I decided, while making the book, that all the pages would be different and that they would be made out of leaves, for example, or a plastic bag. It was interesting working with the leaves to actually make “paper” out of the leaves.

Here are images of my guide:

BLOG: Exploration #1, 9, 11

BLOG: Exploration #1, 9, 11

Hello everyone. Welcome to my blog. I am going to write about the projects that I am doing in the studio.

EXPLORATION #1:

I had to find a spot and right about where I was sitting. I was sitting in the Cohen Studio, on the bottom floor.

My spot in the Cohen Studio when I was doing exploration #1.

Here are the 10 things I experienced:

  1. cold cement floor
  2. fuzzy hat on head
  3. people talking
  4. echoing
  5. someone bumps into me
  6. smell of iron
  7. cold
  8. people calling my name
  9. stools and tables everywhere
  10. claustrophobic

EXPLORATION #9

I had to make a mini ‘museum’ with small interesting pieces. I went out around Alfred University with my head down searching for interesting things that I found interesting. As I was walking, it was interesting to look at the world with my head down, searching for small objects that I found interesting.

*while making the organizer, showing how I separated the objects, I ended up with fountain pen ink all over my hands….

EXPLORATION #11

When I was looking for my small objects, I was on the hunt for feathers, which I collected. Then I had to document 25 differences between the feathers that I collected.

My List Of Differences:
